Teeth Whitening. Professional Teeth Whitening in Draper, Utah Teeth Whitening is the most common cosmetic service provided by a dentist.

But the ability of whitening toothpastes to do what they claim is a source of controversy and debate. Their active ingredients — carbamide peroxide a bleaching chemical , abrasives such as calcium carbonate and detergents sodium lauryl sulphate — may remove surface stains. However, the levels in them of hydrogen peroxide — the tooth- whitening ingredient used by dentists — are too low, at 0.

Most whitening treatments are started in a clinic before being continued at home. At home, you put hydrogen peroxide gel in custom made trays that then fit over the teeth. About 15 years ago, laser whitening treatments were heralded as the next big thing in whitening. In October , a new EU directive made using hydrogen peroxide at above six per cent to whiten teeth illegal.

After whitening, your teeth will be more porous and it is best to stay away from food and drink that will stain — such as coffee and red wine — for a couple of weeks.

Veneers — thin layers of porcelain bonded over the natural teeth with glue — can change the shape of your teeth. This is done under local anaesthetic. Reason to floss: It's not just the teeth that need looking after, approximately one in five of us at any time have some kind of gum disease. Braces can also be fitted to the inside of the teeth, making them virtually undetectable to others. These braces also take longer to move teeth and are more difficult to keep clean.

Daniel Yates, 33, a financial trader from London, is married to Lara, 32, a full-time mum to their two children, Amelie, two, and Felix, seven months. I found myself smiling with my mouth closed. Before and after: Daniel Yates, 33, from London fixed his smile with invisible braces. I work for an American company and everyone at our headquarters in Dallas has a beautiful smile.

So there was an element of making myself look presentable. I chose train-track braces instead of braces behind my teeth because they were more effective. They took 40 minutes to fit and were uncomfortable at first. My lips got sore and blistered. What if your teeth need more than a little clean and polish? For them, dentures used to be the only option. Not any more. The buzz in dentistry is around implants — artificial teeth that are attached to the bone behind your gums and can be fitted in seven hours.

Between four and six implants are attached to each jaw — each of which will hold a bridge of several teeth. The surgeon then screws temporary bridges into the implants, to be worn for two to three months as the implants become embedded in the jaw.

They look like normal teeth but are less resilient, and patients have to avoid hard food such as raw vegetables, nuts and tougher cuts of meat during this time. There is less risk of infection and recovery is much quicker.

The replacement teeth, made of an acrylic composite, are then fitted. Like implants, they are also made of acrylic and come as a complete set, or partial dentures, to replace one or a few missing teeth. Complete dentures are worn over the gums and jawbone. Of course, the term whitening sounds better than bleaching, so it is more frequently used — even when describing products that contain bleach. Most of us start out with sparkling white teeth, thanks to their porcelain-like enamel surface.

How to Floss with Braces

Composed of microscopic crystalline rods, tooth enamel is designed to protect the teeth from the effects of chewing, gnashing, trauma and acid attacks caused by sugar. During routine chewing, dentin remains intact while millions of micro-cracks occur in the enamel. It is these cracks, as well as the spaces between the crystalline enamel rods, that gradually fill up with stains and debris. As a result, the teeth eventually develop a dull, lackluster appearance. Teeth whitening removes the stains and debris, leaving the enamel cracks open and exposed.

Some of the cracks are quickly re-mineralized by saliva, while others are filled up again with organic debris. There are two categories of staining as it relates to the teeth: extrinsic staining and intrinsic staining. Extrinsic stains are those that appear on the surface of the teeth as a result of exposure to dark-colored beverages, foods and tobacco, and routine wear and tear. Superficial extrinsic stains are minor and can be removed with brushing and prophylactic dental cleaning. Stubborn extrinsic stains can be removed with more involved efforts, like teeth bleaching.

Persistent extrinsic stains can penetrate into the dentin and become ingrained if they are not dealt with early. Intrinsic stains are those that form on the interior of teeth. In the past, it was thought that intrinsic stains were too resistant to be corrected by bleaching. Today, cosmetic dentistry experts believe that even deep-set intrinsic stains can be removed with supervised take-home teeth whitening that is maintained over a matter of months or even a year.

If all else fails, there are alternative cosmetic solutions to treat intrinsic staining, such as dental veneers. Whitening and veneers are two popular smile makeover treatment options. Weigh their pros and cons with your needs. Age: There is a direct correlation between tooth color and age. Over the years, teeth darken as a result of wear and tear and stain accumulation.

Maintaining Your Results

Teenagers will likely experience immediate, dramatic results from whitening. In the twenties, as the teeth begin to show a yellow cast, teeth-whitening may require a little more effort. By the forties, the yellow gives way to brown and more maintenance may be called for. By the fifties, the teeth have absorbed a host of stubborn stains which can prove difficult but not impossible to remove. Starting color: We are all equipped with an inborn tooth color that ranges from yellow-brownish to greenish-grey, and intensifies over time.

Yellow-brown is generally more responsive to bleaching than green-grey. Translucency and thinness: These are also genetic traits that become more pronounced with age. While all teeth show some translucency, those that are opaque and thick have an advantage: they appear lighter in color, show more sparkle and are responsive to bleaching.
